Ecotourism Policy for Kilfenora Hostel

Kilfenora Hostel is a member of Burren Ecotourism which is supported by the Burren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark. We are also a member of Green Hospitality Ireland and are working towards certification.

In order to sustain the environment Kilfenora Hostel has implemented some practises such as recycling facilities throughout the hostel. We also use energy bulbs and use ecover and lilly's eco cleaning products.

As Kilfenora Hostel is in the Burren we encourage people to visit the Burren and give you as much information about the area so that you can appreciate and learn about the area.

Interpretation and education of the Burren is essential to you enjoying of this unique area that is why we provide literature and DVDs in the common room for you to use.

Kilfenora Hostel contributes to conservation in the area locally.

We encourage our customers to support the local community by using the local shops. Post office and experience Irish pubs and the traditional Irish music and dancing that they provide. We also use local walking guides.

In order to understand your needs better and improve our services we would ask you to take time to fill out the feedback forms in the reception area.

90% of Kilfenora Hostel marketing is done via the web.

It is important that the staff of Kilfenora Hostel are sensitive to the different cultures that visit, in the same respect is important that visitors to Kilfenora and Ireland are aware and respectful of Irish culture. We will do our best to answer any queries you may have to the best of our abilities.

Kilfenora Hostel Green Policy

Since February 2007 Kilfenora Hostel's energy has been supplied by Airtricty. Where possible our light bulbs are energy efficient. We also use poster and stickers from the 'Power of One' campaign to make you the customer aware of how by turning off a light switch or power point you can make a difference.

We have reduced our water consumption by lowering water pressure.

Kilfenora Hostel is committed to recycling and reducing waste. We recycle all paper, food cans, drinking cans, plastic bottles and glass bottles. Glass jars are saved for local people making jam etc. Egg boxes are kept for local people who keep hens. Wine corks are kept for the local primary schools that get the kids to make notice boards. Our print cartridges are refilled by Cartridgegreen in Ennis.

Food Waste.
Where possible food scraps are given to the local gun club to feed their dogs. Scraps such as peelings from vegetables are given to a local farmer and used as cattle feed.
